Meet your hosts

Hi, we are Niky & Mauro

travelers, photographers, and people deeply connected to nature.

What started as a passion for birds became a way of life, one that we now share through the experiences we create across Colombia. More than guiding tours, we host journeys that connect you with nature, culture, and the essence of this country.

You’re in good hands

“We know Colombia, not just the places, but the stories, the people, and the moments that make each journey unique.” – Niky & Mauro

In 2021, we completed the first Big Year in Colombia, traveling across all 32 departments in 365 days and recording 1,471 species.

But more than a number, it was a journey that allowed us to truly understand this country — its landscapes, its cultures, and the deep connection between birds and territory.

Today, we share that experience with you, designing journeys that go beyond birding, and connect you with the essence of Colombia.

During our Big Year, we had the opportunity to share our journey through an article with National Audubon Society.

You can read it here. (Audubon Articles).

Our journey has also been featured on “Los Informantes”, one of the most important programs on Caracol TV.

You can watch the story here.

Our Story

We are Niky & Mauro, bird photographers, nature lovers, and storytellers.

In 2021, we left behind our routines to embark on a journey that changed our lives: The Big Year Colombia.
For 365 days, we traveled across all 32 departments, recording 1,473 bird species while connecting deeply with the landscapes, cultures, and communities that make this country so extraordinary.

From that journey, something bigger was born:
Birds Colombia Experience.

We believe birding is not just about counting species.
It’s about connection, between people, places, and stories.

That’s why we create a different kind of journey, where you don’t just visit Colombia…
you truly live it.

When you travel with us, you’re not booking a tour.
You’re becoming part of a story.

You’ll walk the trails we’ve walked, meet the people who have inspired us, and experience Colombia through our eyes — and through our lenses.

Beyond travel, we also lead Guardián de las Aves, a project that connects children across Colombia with nature and conservation.

So every journey you take with us supports something greater.

We don’t travel with strangers.
We travel with friends.

In 2021, we set out on a journey that changed our lives forever.
We left everything behind to travel across Colombia for an entire year — photographing birds, meeting communities, and discovering the soul of our country through its wings.

This gallery is a visual journal of that journey.
Moments of wonder, challenge, connection, and joy.
A story of flight — one image at a time.

(January 1 to December 31, 2021)

Over the years, we’ve built a trusted network of partners around the world — agencies, operators, and friends who share our vision of creating authentic, responsible, and meaningful experiences in Colombia.

Through these connections, more travelers have discovered the country we love — through birds, culture, and real human connection.
