Birding ethics

At Birds Colombia Experience, we believe that birdwatching is more than taking a photo or spotting a rare species. It is a way to connect with nature, respect life, and protect the places and people that make Colombia the country of birds.

Principles of Ethical Birding

  1. Respect for Birds
    • Observe birds without disturbing their natural behavior.
    • Avoid the use of playback or calls that may stress or disorient birds.
    • Never handle or remove birds, nests, or eggs from their natural habitat.
    • Prioritize the well-being of wildlife over the pursuit of a photo or sighting.
  2. Respect for Nature
    • Stay on designated trails to prevent habitat damage.
    • Do not litter; always carry your waste out.
    • Use resources such as water and energy responsibly during your travels.
    • Support conservation initiatives that protect ecosystems and species.
  3. Respect for People and Culture
    • Honor the traditions, knowledge, and customs of local communities.
    • Always ask for consent before photographing people.
    • Purchase local products and crafts to support community economies.
    • Be a good guest—kindness and humility open doors everywhere.
  4. Respect for Fellow Birders
    • Share space fairly when observing a bird—everyone deserves a chance.
    • Keep noise to a minimum to enhance the experience for all.
    • Offer help to beginners and foster an atmosphere of learning and friendship.
    • Celebrate sightings together, not competitively.
  5. Responsibility as a Traveler
    • Follow the guidance of professional birding guides.
    • Comply with national and international regulations for wildlife and cultural heritage protection.
    • Say no to wildlife trafficking and exploitation.
    • Lead by example: inspire others to bird ethically through your actions.

For us, birding is about respect—respect for the bird, for the forest, for the people, and for each other. That’s how we make sure that every journey through Colombia’s skies and landscapes leaves wings free to fly.

Following the Guide to Good Birdwatching Tourism Practices in Colombia, we commit to practicing and promoting respectful, enjoyable, and thoughtful birding.
