
The Orinoco region is one of the natural regions of Colombia that belongs to the Orinoco River watershed. It is also known colloquially as the Eastern Plains from the Spanish Llanos Orientales.
The ecosystems of the region are tropical savanna with gallery forests and wetlands along the rivers.

Meta/Casanare/Arauca
The Llanos is a vast tropical grassland plain situated to the east of the Andes in Colombia, It is an ecoregion of the tropical and subtropical grasslands, savannas, and shrublands biome.
The Llanos’ wetlands supports around 70 species of water birds, including the scarlet ibis. A large portion of the distribution of the sharp-tailed ibis and white-bearded flycatcher is in the Llanos.

Vichada
Vichada is located in the eastern plains of Colombia, in the Orinoquía Region within the Orinoco river basin.
Aside from being a small town, a tourist gateway to other destinations, an outpost on Colombia’s frontier and a fluvial river port city; Puerto Carreno has become a tourist destination on its own merit with a growing list of tourist attractions.

Guaviare
Originally inhabited by the indigenous Nukak people, Flat or slightly undulating lands predominate, the north, which is part of the Eastern Plains, where the Sabana de la Fuga stands out. The soils are quite sandy. Some mountain systems stand out and among them are the rocky mountain ranges of Chiribiquete.

International Joropo Contest
Each and every year, Villavicencio is home to the International Joropo Contest, which has taken place every year since 1960, and typically draws a crowd of around 500,000 persons. During the contest, which takes place in July, there are equestrian shows, cavalcades, and the crowing of the international champion of joropo. The International Joropo Contest is held in a vast open-air stadium and features the dancing of about 3000 couples.

In the municipality of San Martín one of the oldest and most important festivals of the department is celebrated: Las Cuadrillas de San Martín, declared cultural heritage of the nation. In this festival you can witness musical events that include joropo and coleo among other activities full of party and joy.
