
Amazon region in southern Colombia comprises the departments of Amazonas, Caquetá, Guainía, Guaviare, Putumayo and Vaupés, and covers an area of 483,000 km², 35% of Colombia’s total territory. The region is mostly covered by tropical rainforest, or jungle, which is a part of the greater Amazon rainforest.

Caquetá/Putumayo
Is a departments of Southern Colombia. It is in the south-west of the country, bordering Ecuador and Peru.
The word putumayo comes from the Quechua languages. The verb p’utuy means «to spring forth» or «to burst out», and mayu means river. Thus it means «gushing river».

Vaupés
The department’s main economic activities feature logging and fishing, with much exportation to neighboring Brazil.
The vast majority of the population consists of indigenous inhabitants. It is the least populated department in the country.

Guainía
Guainía ; Yuri language: «Land of many waters»
The population is mainly composed of Amerindians, and the largest ethnic groups are the Puinaves (from the makú-puinave family) and the curripacos (from the Arawak family).

Amazonas
It is the largest department in area while also having the 3rd smallest population. Its capital is Leticia and its name comes from the Amazon River, which drains the department, the following ethnic groups are found in the department: Bora, Cocama, Macuna, Mirana, Okaina, Ticunas, Tucano, Uitoto, Yagua, and Yucuna, among others. These groups are more than 5,000 years old.

Carnival of Forgiveness
One especially important event is the Carnival of the Return of the First People, which is both a fun event and key celebration of local mythology.
This carnival, also known as Bëtscnate, in the Katmëntsá people, and Kalusturinda, in the Inga community, unites these two peoples around forgiveness and the search for peace, patience, respect and love.
